End of the Week Catch-up

Good Afternoon!

What a beautiful afternoon we have today.  However, that is soon to change!  With the beginning of cold and rainy days, please remember to send your child in with cold weather gear, such as coats, hats, and mittens when needed. Also, our lost and found area is beginning to overflow with jackets, sweaters, hats, sweatshirts…… so give it a quick once over when you are here.

A few reminders…

  • Our first homework is due tomorrow.  Homework is normally due on Fridays, however the students will not be at school this coming Friday.  Which leads to the next reminder….
  • No School this Friday!  Students will not be attending school as this is a teacher work day.
  • Tomorrow is the last day for Scholastic Book orders for October.  If you would like to order some books, please order online or send in the order form tomorrow.
  • Going home today is a volunteer sign-up sheet for our upcoming walking field trip on October 24th to the Carnation Farmers Market.  Since this is a walking field trip, there is no permission slip to sign.  However, if you would like to join us on a (hopefully) beautiful afternoon, please send in the sign up sheet by  Monday the 17th.
  • Also, many thanks for sending in a small snack with your child it really helps to energize their brain until lunchtime 🙂

Have a happy, if blustery, weekend!

A Few Reminders and a Thank You ….

Good Afternoon!

Just a few reminders:

  • Tomorrow is the annual Tolt Dam Evacuation Drill.  We will be walking the evacuation route tomorrow morning, so please remember to have your child wear PE shoes and dress for the weather!
  • Our field trip permission slips and fees are due this Thursday.  If you haven’t yet turned that in, please do so at your earliest convenience.
  • Please remember to send in a small snack with your child each day.  No nuts, yogurt/liquid, or sweet treats please. 🙂

And a big THANK YOU for helping to make our Open House Night so successful!  It was wonderful to meet so many parents, siblings, grandparents, and best friends of our students.   We are really building our community of learners when we connect together!

Welcome to 2nd Grade!

Dear Second Grade Parents,

Thank you so much for signing up for our shared 2nd Grade blog!  We will be sharing classroom doings and happenings, school reminders, and upcoming events here on a regular basis.   We also have links to sites that include fun games and practice for math, reading, and science as well as our contact information and school calendar.   We are so excited to begin a new school year with these stupendous second graders!

  • This year 2nd graders  have a later lunch time.  To keep our energy high and feed our brains,  we will be having a short snack time right before first recess.  Please send in a small snack in your student’s lunch (i.e. crackers, a piece of fruit, or cheese stick) .  Please no yogurt, liquid, nuts (all kinds) or sugary snacks.
  • Today is International Dot Day!  We will read The Dot by Peter Reynolds and discuss the theme of self-confidence, perseverance, and “making your mark on the world”.  We will also do some dot art, dot math, and dot reading.
  • For Mrs. Hickman and Ms. Bohl’s classroom, Scholastic book orders are due today.  Please order online or send in the paper order no later than Friday morning.

In case you missed it in student mail, here is a quick peek into our first week together!

What a fun and exciting week we’ve had together!  Thanks for sending such well-prepared children.   They are absolutely, positively delightful and I am so excited to get to know each and every one of them!

This week we enjoyed some great stories, drew outstanding pictures, and wrote about a special time in summer that brought a smile to our face!

We also spent some time reading just right books, exploring our iPads, reading a variety of poetry, starting a fabulous art project, and working on our school wide PAWS program (ask your child what PAWS stands for!). Also, have your child tell you about a few of our Read Alouds, such as First Day Jitters and Rufus Goes to School.

A huge thank you to everyone who has spent the time and effort to send in headphones for your child, pay the student supply fee, and return the paperwork that went home this week.  If you haven’t yet had a chance to send those items in, please do so as soon as possible.

We are off to a great start in 2nd Grade and I can tell it is simply going to be a “tiger-rific” school year!

Walk A Thon

Students – Remember the Walk-A-Thon tomorrow! Wear your walking shoes and your sunscreen. It looks like it will be a SUNNY day!

We hope that families will join us for the picnic at 11:30 a.m., following the Walk-A-Thon. You can bring your lunch or purchase lunch from school and join us outside near the playground.

Good Afternoon!

First, a few notes and reminders ….

  • Our zoo field trip permission slips are due this Thursday, April 7th.  Please send in the permission slip and your child’s fee as soon as possible.

  • Coming home today in your student’s folder is a sheet that details our upcoming Amazon Rainforest animal project.  Please help your child decide which project they would like to complete to present their Amazon Rainforest animal and return the Home-School Connection in the homework this Friday.

Next, a few upcoming events …

  • Carnation Elementary STEM Night is Thursday, April 21st at 5:00pm.  Come and enjoy an evening filled with hands-on math and science activities!
  • Our field trip to the Woodland Park Zoo is Thursday, April 28th – thanks to everyone who has turned in their forms!
  • The PTSA Rock-n-Roll Walkathon will be Friday, May 13th.  They are in need of volunteers!  If you are interested in helping with the event or  with our classroom  in particular, please click on the following link:

  • The Spring Read-a-Thon begins this Friday, April 9th through April 29th.  Forms went home today in your student’s folder.  Record their reading on the sheet (this includes reading for homework and animal research reading) and let’s see if we can really WOW Mrs. Irion with all the amazing second readers!
  • Don’t forget to check out some of the cool storytime and kids programming events going on at the KCLS libraries over spring break.  Check out their website at  http://www.kcls.org/programs/  .  You can even sign up to receive free admission to KidsQuest Museum and the Bellevue Arts Museum!  Lots of great stuff to try out over Spring Break.  🙂

And lastly,  have a GREAT Spring Break filled with laughter and love (and, hopefully, some sunshine)!

Happy Monday!

Just a few quick notes as we head into mid-winter break:

  1. The homework coming home today is for this week and next week and is due back Friday, February 19th.  Both math practice sheets involve identifying and adding coins together.  This is a great opportunity to have your student build these numbers using real coins that you have at home.   Identifying which coin is which can be challenging and this extra practice with real money will help you child build their knowledge!
  2. We are focusing on optimism in our classrooms for the month of February. We will be talking with each other all month on how when we think we can try something and give it our best shot it can help us grow!
  3. Our Valentine celebration is this Thursday, February 11th.  Please remember to send in your child’s valentine mailbox or bag and valentines for each of your classmates to exchange with each other!
  4. Mid-winter break begins this Friday, February 12th.  We will return to school on Wednesday, February 17th.  Let’s hope for a few rays of sunshine and have a great time together!
  5. Our field trip to the Kidsquest museum is Friday, February 19th.  This is a full-day Friday with dismissal at 3:30.

Enjoy the Sunshine!

Raffle Basket Update

Oops! We’ve just been told the raffle baskets are raffled off in a “lottery” style fashion. You buy raffle tickets, a ticket is drawn for each basket and the recipient of that ticket wins the basket rather than going to the highest bidder! So be sure to buy some raffle tickets at BINGO and support our PTSA!

The PTSA Bingo and Raffle Basket Night is coming soon!

On Friday, February 5th, the Carnation PTSA will be hosting a Bingo night from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and raffling off fantastic baskets to the lucky raffle ticket holder.  Thank you to all who have donated to our raffle baskets!  If you haven’t yet had a chance, there is still time to donate to our classroom baskets.  Mrs. Hickman’s basket theme is “The 12th Man” and Mrs. O’Dannel’s basket theme is “For the Crafty People”.  Please consider donating something that fits the theme or cash/checks are also welcome.  Donations are due Thursday, January 28th, however the sooner donations come in, the easier it is on our fabulous volunteers who are putting the baskets together.   This is a great fundraiser for the PTSA and is a lot of fun for families to attend together.  Hope to see you there!

Mrs. Hickman and Mrs. O’Dannel

Just a few things ….

  • Today, your child’s RAZkids login and Xtra math login came home in their folder.  Make sure to sign up using the directions on the sheet.  This is a great way to keep reading and math skills sharp over the winter break!
  • Friday is pajama day and stuffed animal day!  We’ll be having a relaxed, cozy reading and board game party after lunch to celebrate the winter holiday break.  Students are welcome to bring a favorite book from home to read in class if they’d like.
  • Wishing you all a beautiful Winter Break filled with peace and love!
